This year, Portlanders will take important votes on who they want representing them, and I wanted to get a jump on election season by expressing my support for one candidate in particular - City Councilor Steve Novick.
During his first term Steve has provided steady, pragmatic leadership. He is focused on solving problems, not throwing tantrums. We need Steve on the City Council, and he needs us to help him get there.
Steve needs the resources to let voters know about his record and explain that he is part of the solution, not part of the problem. So if you can afford to give $350 (which is the maximum), or $250, or $100, or even $25, please do so!

Want something more than my opinion? Here’s what Steve and others are saying:
“Steve is the Council’s practical, principled progressive with a record of getting things done.” – Former Congressman Earl Blumenauer
Responsible with your money: Steve Novick has fought to cut the bloated budgets - $1.45 million apiece! - the Council voted itself for their personal offices. He’s sent much of his own budget back to the city and used some to pay for community needs like fixing parks bathrooms. Steve is pushing to shift 911 “welfare check” calls from police officers to less expensive unarmed personnel. Steve voted against increasing the Arts Tax. Steve wants to keep the Blazers, while making sure that we get as much money out of the Moda Center as we put in.
Public safety: Steve successfully pushed the Police Bureau to dramatically expand its use of the “red flag law,” taking guns out of the hands of people who are a danger to themselves or others. When some councilors tried to slash funding for removal of the most hazardous homeless camps, Steve successfully protected it. He passed legislation to hold property owners accountable for allowing their property to be used as a base for drug dealing and sex trafficking.
“Steve is my strong ally in fighting sex trafficking on 82d Avenue.” – State Representative Thuy Tran
Common Sense: Steve is working to remove silly regulations – like the requirement that a bar must have a special permit to have a pool table. He fought some councilors’ proposed cuts to the city office that helps small businesses with graffiti and vandalism.
“Being progressive matters only if you make progress. I’ll work with anyone to make Portland better.”
- Steve Novick
